A Jonathan Edwards Commentary on the Book of Romans
By Jonathan Edwards, David S. Lovi & Benjamin Westerhoff (eds)
Date of release: 31/10/2013
Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758) is considered one the greatest minds in American history, and one of America’s greatest pastors. He was an incredibly prolific writer on the subjects of natural science, philosophy and the psychology of religion although he was chiefly a biblical thinker and minister of the Word. The diaspora of his writings, including sermons, published books, private notebooks, letters, a biography, treatises, his “Blank Bible”, and various handbooks, all testify to the depth of his biblical insight as well as his logic.
Although this corpus is littered with expository thoughts on Romans, no collection has ever been made of Edwards’ thoughts on this most beloved and contested text, until now.
In this volume Lovi and Westerhoff gather Edwards’ comments on Romans, as well as explication portions of all of Edwards’ sermons on Romans, and order them canonically to form a commentary of exceptional quality.
An invaluable resource for pastors, theologians, New Testament scholars, Edwards scholars, church historians, and curious readers of the Bible, this new commentary explores Romans’ presentation of the doctrine of sin, the gospel, and salvation as well as the reflections on themes of Israel, predestination, the church, Christian living, faith, the Law and resurrection, themes that make Romans a seminal text of Christian soteriology and biblical theology.
